Onto New York

June 11th, 2007 WendyLee

Woke up at some ungodly hour so that we could be at the airport by 7 in the morning.

I had to catch a flight from Milwaukee to New York via Chicago in which I had a stopover for an hour. Finally got to my hotel in New York about 4.30 that afternoon. I feel like I have spent a good part of this trip on flights or in airports.

Arrived at my Hotel staying at The Pod What a funky place it was to stay.
I felt like I was right in the middle of Manhatten and within walking distance of everything. The Pod was great little place to stay. The rooms were small but it had everything I needed and I really didn;t spend much time there other to sleep.

Although in all the hotels I stayed in none had a fridge in them which is really unusual. Oh and I really missed my coffee machine at home.

This was on the back of the door in my room..

Show Over – Last Night

June 10th, 2007 WendyLee

Well its finally over and we are all utterly exhausted.

For the final night in Milwaukee we had dinner at the revolving restaraunt on the top of the hotel.

As you can see it spins very fast.

Tommorrow we are all off in different directions. I am heading off on my own to New York for a week. Lots of exciting things planned for New York!

The bead and Button show was an amazing opportunity and adventure. It was worth all the hard work just for the fact of being there apart of it all!

Thankyou to Michael and Valerie for doing all the behind the scenes arranging for us and opening this opportunity to us!

Taking photos at Bead and Button

June 8th, 2007 WendyLee

I am really embaressed to say that is really the extent of my photos at the Bead and Button show. We really didn’t have time to stop and take photos. When I did have a moment to spare I was running off shopping and looking at everyone elses beads.

It would be an amzing show to simply attand as a shopper and do some Workshops. We had Val from Valleygem runing around shopping and doing workshops. She would always stop in to show us her goodies and show us a bargain she had purchased.
I was happy with everything I got to see at the show I was very organised and had mapped everyone out in the programme so I didn;t go home without seeing them.

Anne Choi was on top pf my list, I have always wanted to own one of her stunning silver beads. She and her sister were so lovely. The bead I chose jumped out at me staight away. IT had dragonflies on it…MMMMMM. Will take photos of my goodies soon. Check out Anne stunning work here http://annechoi.com/ …Actually my bead looks just like the one on the front. The quote down the side says “everything you can imagine is real” I though it was just perfect.

Joan Miller was next on my hit list. I have always lusted after her beads. http://www.joanmiller.com/
I spurged and purchased 2 of her beads. One has a dragonfly (are you noticing a trend here) and the other is one her Octopus/seahorse beads..mmmmmm. They are just divine in real life.

The most sensational raku fired ceramic leaves from “Rama with Emeralds Beads” She sells on Ebay as “rakubeadgirl”

They were the only artist beads that I prurchased. I really didn’t buy any other beads other then supplies and tools. I was saving my money to spend with the wholesalers in New York!

Well D day is here…

June 8th, 2007 WendyLee

Today is the first show of the bead and button show. Feeling a bit sick on my stomach (all nerves) although didn;t get to much sleep last night as Wendy and I were half the night talking. We were like 2 teenage girls on school camp. LOL..

We set off to go and set up our stalls for the show, walking there on foot with all our stuff was an adventure in itself. we got there, checked in got our name tags and then we stood at the door to the show….OMG… I nearly threw up…IT WAS HUGGGGGEEE, and I mean massive. This show was bigger then any Bead show I had dome here in Australia. At this point Wendy and I looked at each other and nearly ran home. LOL. BUt we didn’t we went getting sidetracked by others setting up there stalls. Pointing at people like starstrucked teenagers. We found our “Australia Island” and started to set up. The stalll looked great, we had Australian flags along the top of the stall, some relaly nice posters of Australian scenery at the back of the stall and it looked great. Everybody commented how good the stall looked when they came over to talk to us.

Those are a couple of pictures of what our stalls looked like set up. It was all very unusual for us as we were used to booths with walls. In the US they were big fans of open spaces and no walls.

I think we did very well with our set ups considering we were restricted with weights for our luggage.

Kobe Glass Museum – Japan

June 8th, 2007 WendyLee

Today at the show we were approached by a reprecentative of the Kobe Glass Museum. He was asking for a beads to be put on display for a permanent glass exhibition in Kobe Japan. There is a big Glass/bead show there this October that will tie in with the exhibition.

Unfortunately I will not be able to attand the show But My beads will be there. Very Exciting to have my work in a Japanese museum.

Another highlihght of the show was my work along with Janice Everts opals were filmed for a morning brekkie show in Milawaukee. It was done for promotion to get people to come to the show. We had people come in and say they saw our beads on Tv that morning….LOL..

Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA

June 7th, 2007 WendyLee

The day before the Bead and Button show started we had some time to go and explore Milwaukee and Play the tourist.

On the Tuesday we tasted Cheese at the cheese factory and chocolate at a lovely little chocolate shop. The afternoon was spent at Miller brewery, where we toured the factory and then spent the afternoon sampling the beers they had to offer.

Wednesday Wendy Bergamin (the other Wendy) and I set out to find a bank so we could exchange some money so we were ready for the show. So we set off map in hand and found a bank with a very helpful teller to exchange out money. We then discussed what we would like to do as we had some time to fill in. We wanted to go to the art museum and we also wanted to go to see Pabst Mansion and a few other buildings that were in totally opposite directions. So we decised to do the art museum as we didn’t have time to do both. At this point I will fess up and say that yes I was directing and reading the map (and Wendy has already dobbed me in on her blog..LOL)

It was a gorgeous afternoon and we are strolluing along and taking photos of some amazing buildings around the Marquette university. We were walking for quite a while and thought we had better look at the map, Ok no problems still a bit to go. Then we came across this gorgeous mansion on our right. Oh look Wendy, isn’t it beautiful. I wonder what it is. Oh there is a sign lets go read it. YEs well you guessed it …..Pabst Mansion…. Which was all good as we wanted to see it but we were supposed to be heading in the direction of the art gallery. (perhaps I can blame the jetlag…or feeling topsy turvey…LOL)

We decided to stay and to take a tour of the mansion which is in the process of restoration work which is nearly complete. The most amazing thing that fascinated me abou the house was the “Sun Room” that was attached to the side of the house. Pabst had this built as his stand for attending European Trade shows (he was a beer baron). It was designed so that when the shows were completed it would be shipped home and then attached to the house.
The reason this fascinated me so much was that I was in Milwaukee for the bead and button show as an exhibiter, I was able to pack the entire display into a suitcase. My stall as the others consists of a table and with a table cloth on it. So you can imagine why I was in awe of this sandstone Building which was his stand. Check out the website to read more about the mansion. http://www.pabstmansion.com/
